TheEuropeanUnion(EU)isoneofthelargesttradingblocsintheworld,withapopulationofover500millionpeopleandacombinedGDPofover$18trillion.Asaregionaltradingbloc,theEUhastoadoptcertaintradepoliciestoprotectitsdomesticindustriesandensurethatitsmemberstatesbenefitfrominternationaltrade.OneofthemainpoliciesthattheEUhasadoptedistheuseoftechnicalbarrierstotrade,whichmainlytaketheformofstandardsandregulations.ThesetechnicalbarrierstotradearedesignedtoensurethatproductsenteringtheEUcomplywithcertainstandards,whichareoftenhigherthanthoseinothercountries.ThispaperexaminestheuseoftechnicalbarrierstotradeintheEU,withafocusonthecoordinationofstandards.
