Introduction
TheFastNeutronPhysicsInternationalSymposiumwasheldinFrancefrom18to22June2018,whereleadingexpertsfromaroundtheworldgatheredtoexchangeideas,discussrecentprogress,andhighlighttheimportanceoffastneutronphysicsinanumberofscientificapplications.Thissymposiumservedasanopportunityforscientiststodisplaytheirlatestresearchfindingsanddiscussthefuturedirectionofthefieldoffastneutronphysics.Thepurposeofthispaperistoprovideanoverviewofthesymposiumanddiscusssomeofthekeytopicsthatwerepresented.
ApplicationsofFastNeutronPhysics
Fastneutronphysicshasabroadrangeofapplications,whichwerediscussedextensivelyduringthesymposium.Oneoftheprimaryapplicationsoffastneutronphysicsisinnuclearfissionreactorswherefastneutronscanbeusedinbreedingfissionablecombustiblematerials.Thisisaccomplishedbyfirstintroducingasourceofneutronsintoareactor,whichisthenusedtoactivateafertilematerialbyconvertingitintoafissionablematerial.Thefissionablematerialcanthenbeusedtoproduceenergythroughnuclearreactions.
