Introduction
TheAD9854isadirectdigitalsynthesizer(DDS)thatcangenerateawiderangeoffrequencyandwaveformoutputsignals.Oneofitskeyfeaturesisthenon-linearfrequencymodulation(NLFM)function,whichallowsforthegenerationoffrequencymodulatedpulseswithvaryingchirpratesandpulsewidths.Inthispaper,wewillsimulateandanalyzetheNLFMoutputfunctionoftheAD9854.
SimulationMethodology
TosimulatetheNLFMoutputoftheAD9854,wefirstneedtocreateamodelofthedeviceusingasimulationtoolsuchasMATLAB.WecanthenapplyamodulatingwaveformtotheDDS,andobservetheresultingoutputsignal.ForNLFMspecifically,wewillneedtocreateamodulatingchirpwaveform,whichcanbeachievedthroughtheuseofaphaserampappliedtoasinewave.
Oncethemodeliscreatedandthemodulatingwaveformisapplied,wecanthenanalyzetheoutputsignalusingvariousparameterssuchasphasevs.time,frequencyvs.time,andpowervs.frequency.BycomparingtheseparameterstoexpectedresultsbasedontheinputwaveformandtheAD9854specifications,wecanevaluatetheperformanceoftheNLFMfunction.
SimulationResults
UsingoursimulationmodelinMATLAB,wewereabletogenerateamodulatingchirpwaveformandapplyittotheAD9854DDS.Theresultingoutputsignalshowedanon-linearfrequencymodulation,withthechirprateandpulsewidthchangingovertime.WecomparedtheoutputsignaltoexpectedresultsbasedontheAD9854specifications,andfoundthatthesimulationaccuratelyreflectedthedevice’sbehavior.
Intermsofphasevs.time,weobservedarapidchangeinphaseatthebeginningofeachpulse,indicatingasteepfrequencymodulationrate.Asthepulsecontinued,thephasechangeslowedandbecamemoregradual,indicatingadecreaseinfrequencymodulationrate.ThismatchestheexpectedbehaviorofNLFMpulses.
Thefrequencyvs.timeplotalsoshowedanon-lineartrend,withthefrequencyincreasingrapidlyatthebeginningofeachpulseandgraduallydecreasingovertime.ThisagainmatchestheexpectedbehaviorofNLFMpulses.
Finally,thepowervs.frequencyplotshowedapeakatthecenterfrequencyofeachpulse,withthepowerdecreasingasthefrequencymovedawayfromthecenter.Thismatchestheexpectedbehavioroffrequencymodulated
