Abstract
DS-CDMA(DirectSequenceCodeDivisionMultipleAccess)systemshavebeenusedwidelyinmoderncommunicationsystems.DirectionofArrival(DOA)estimationisacriticalaspectinthedesignofDS-CDMAsystems.Blindseparationtechniqueshavegainedpopularityinrecentyearsduetotheirabilitytocopewithmulti-pathdispersionandinterferences.Thispaperpresentsanin-depthanalysisofDOAestimationalgorithmsbasedonblindseparationtechniquesusedinDS-CDMAsystems.
Introduction
DOAestimation,asignificantprobleminsignalprocessingandcommunicationsisespeciallyimportantinwirelesscommunications.Thecapabilitytoaccuratelydeterminetheangle-of-arrival(AOA)ofareceivedsignalhelpsovercomethefundamentallimitationofwirelesscommunicationsduetopropagationeffects.DOAestimationalgorithmsbasedontraditionalMUSIC,ESPRIT,andMaximumLikelihood(ML)methodsrequirecomplexsignalparametersinformationandexplicitassumptionsaboutthesignals,makingthemimpracticalformanyapplications.Thedifficultyandchallengeinseparatingsignalsunderunknownenvironmentsandspecificationsgaverisetothebirthofblindsourceseparation(BSS).

BSSisasignalprocessingtechniqueusedtoseparateasetofsourcesignalsfrommixedobservedsignalswithoutanypriorknowledgeofsourcesignalsorthemixingprocessitself.BSStechniquesarecapableofstrippingthemixedsignalsdownintoacollectionofindependent,uncorrelatedsignalsbyseparatingthesourcesandestimatingthemixingmatrix.BSShelpsovercometheproblemsofinter-symbolinterferenceandmultipleaccessinterferenceinDS-CDMAsystems.

DirectionofarrivalestimationreferstotheprocessofestimatingtheAOAofareceivedsignal.ThemainmethodsofobtainingDOAestimationinclude:TimeofArrival(TOA),PhaseComparison(PC),AmplitudeComparison(AC),andCombination(CMB)methods.ThePCandACmethodsrelyonthedifferenceinphaseandamplitudebetweensignalsatdifferentreceivingantennas.TheCMBmethodcombinesthePCandACmethodstoincreasetheaccuracyofDOAestimation.
