Thegroundingnetworkisanimportantcomponentoftheelectricalpowersystemthatprovidesasafepathforfaultcurrentstoflowtoearth.Thegroundingnetworkensuresthesafetyofpersonnel,equipment,andthesurroundingenvironment.Duetothecomplexityofthegroundingsystemandtheeffectsofelectromagneticfields,itisimportanttoanalyzetheperformanceofthegroundingsystemusingnumericalmethods.Thefrequencydomainfiniteelementmethod(FEM)isapowerfultooltosimulatetheelectricalbehaviorofthegroundingnetwork.
FrequencyDomainFiniteElementMethod:
Thefiniteelementmethod(FEM)isanumericalmethodusedtosolvepartialdifferentialequations.Thefrequencydomainfiniteelementmethodisusedtosolveelectromagneticproblemsinthefrequencydomain.Inthefrequencydomain,theelectromagneticfieldisrepresentedbycomplexnumbers.ThegoverningequationsforelectromagneticfieldsinthefrequencydomainaretheMaxwell'sequations.Theseequationsaredifferentialequationsthatdescribethebehaviorofelectromagneticfields.
ThefrequencydomainFEMdiscretizestheproblemdomainintofiniteelementsandapproximatesthesolutionusingbasisfunctions.Thebasisfunctionsarechosenbasedonthegeometryoftheproblemdomainandthephysicsoftheproblem.Thesolutionisobtainedbysolvingasetofequationsfortheunknownfieldvaluesatthenodesofthefiniteelementmesh.Thefiniteelementmeshisacollectionofnodesconnectedbyelements.
