1.Introduction
Inrecentyears,therehasbeenanincreaseinthenumberoffirescausedbyflammablefurnitureandmattresses.Toreducetheriskofsuchtragedies,theNationalInstituteofStandardsandTechnology(NIST)intheUnitedStateshasdevelopedatechnologytomeasuretheflammabilityoffurnitureandmattressesusingcigarettes.Thistechnology,calledthecigaretteignitionresistancetest,willbediscussedindetailinthispaper.
2.Background
AccordingtoNIST,homefirescausedbyfurnitureandmattressesarebecomingmorecommon.In2017,over10,000suchfiresoccurredintheUS,resultingin475deathsand$1.3billioninpropertydamage.Theprimarycauseofthesefiresistheuseofflammablematerialsintheproductionoffurnitureandmattresses,suchassyntheticfoam,polyurethane,andpolyester.
Toaddressthisissue,NISTdevelopedthecigaretteignitionresistancetest,whichisusedtomeasuretheflammabilityoffurnitureandmattresses.Thetestevaluatestheabilityofthesematerialstoresistignitionwhenexposedtoanopenflame,suchasacigarette.
3.TheCigaretteIgnitionResistanceTest
Thecigaretteignitionresistancetestinvolvesplacingalitcigaretteonasampleofthematerialbeingtestedandrecordingthetimeittakesforthematerialtoignite.Thetestisperformedundercontrolledconditions,includingthesizeofthesampleandtheangleatwhichthecigaretteisplaced.
Thetestisbasedonthefactthatcigarettesareacommonsourceofignitioninhomefires.Byusingcigarettestotesttheflammabilityoffurnitureandmattresses,NISTisabletosimulatereal-worldconditionsandprovideaccurateresults.
4.ResultsoftheCigaretteIgnitionResistanceTest
Theresultsofthecigaretteignitionresistancetestcanbeusedtodeterminetheflammabilityoffurnitureandmattresses.Materialsthatignitequicklywhenexposedtoalitcigaretteareconsideredtobehighlyflammableandposeagreaterriskofcausingafire.
Conversely,materialsthatresistignitionandtakelongertoburnareconsideredtobelessflammableandsaferforuseinfurnitureandmattresses.Manufacturerscanusetheseresultstomakeinformeddecisionsaboutthematerialstheyuseintheirproductsandtoensurethattheycomplywithsafetyregulat
