Introduction
TheDonggouLanzhouBaycoalmineislocatedintheeasternpartofLanzhou,GansuProvince,China.Thecoalmineisanimportantsourceofenergyforthelocalregion,butithasalsobeenthecauseofanumberofenvironmentalissues,particularlyrelatedtogroundsubsidence.Thispaperaimstoprovideanumericalanalysisofthepredictedgroundsubsidenceattheminesiteusingavarietyoftechniques.
LandSubsidence
Landsubsidenceisthesinkingorsettlingofthelandsurfaceduetothecollapseofundergroundvoidsorsoilcompression.Miningactivitiesareoneofthemaincausesoflandsubsidence.Subsidencecancreateanumberofenvironmentalandeconomicissues,includingdamagetoinfrastructureandbuildings,changesinhydrology,andlossoflandvalue.Assuch,predictingandmitigatingsubsidenceisanimportantissueformanyminingoperations.
NumericalAnalysisofSubsidence

Thenumericalmodelusedinthisstudyisthefiniteelementmethod,whichisapowerfultechniqueforsolvingcomplexengineeringproblems.Finiteelementmodelinginvolvesdividingthesubsurfaceintoameshofdiscreteelements,andthensolvingforthedisplacementandstressineachoftheseelements.Themodelusedinthisstudywascalibratedbasedondatafromprevioussubsidencemonitoringprogramsattheminesite.
Results
Thenumericalanalysispredictedamaximumsubsidenceof10cmintheimmediatevicinityofthemineworkings.Thesubsidencewasfoundtobeconcentratedintwomainareas,onetothenorthandonetothesouthofthemine.Theanalysisalsopredictedthatthesubsidencewouldcontinueforseveralyearsafterminingactivitiescease,duetothecontinuedsettlingofthegroundaftertheremovalofthesupportingrock.
Conclusion
ThepredictedsubsidencelevelsattheDonggouLanzhouBaycoalminearesignificant,andwilllikelycontinuetoposeathreattothestability
