Introduction
Thestudyoflanguagehassignificantcontributionstovariousfields,includinglinguistics,psychology,computerscience,andeducation.Oneofthesignificantareaswherelanguagestudyisapplicableisinjobapplications,whereinaresumeorcurriculumvitae(CV)issubmitted.ACVisessentialtogiveanoverviewoftheapplicant'squalifications,skills,andexperiences.Assuch,thelanguageusedinaCVneedstobeappropriate,accurate,andprecise.Thesystemicfunctionallinguistics(SFL)theoryprovidesaframeworkforanalyzingthelanguageusedinaCV.Inthisreport,IwillpresentasummaryofarticlesthatdiscussthelanguageclassanalysisofanEnglishresumeusingtheSFLtheory.
SystemicFunctionalLinguistics(SFL)
SFLisatheorythatwasdevelopedbylinguistsMichaelHallidayandRuqaiyaHasan.Itanalyzeslanguagebyexaminingtherelationoflanguagetothecontextofsituation,whichinvolvesexaminingthepurpose,field,andtenor.Thetheoryproposesthatlanguageisfunctional,anditsprimarypurposeistocommunicatemeaning.SFLdistinguishesthreekeydimensionsoflanguageuse,namely,theideational,interpersonal,andtextualdimensions.Theideationaldimensionisconcernedwiththerepresentationofexperiencesormeanings,theinterpersonaldimensionwithsocialinteractionsandrelationshipsbetweenthespeakerandtheaudience,andthetextualdimensionwiththeorganizationandstructureofthetext.
LanguageClassAnalysisofEnglishResumeusingSFL
ThelanguageclassanalysisoftheEnglishresumeusingSFLaimstodeterminethethreedimensionsoflanguageuseoutlinedintheSFLtheory.Theideationaldimensionreferstotherepresentationofexperiencesormeaningsandincludesthelanguageusedtodescribetheapplicant'squalifications,skills,andexperiences.Theinterpersonaldimensionreferstothesocialinteractionsandrelationshipsbetweentheapplicantandtheaudience,includingthelanguageusedtoaddressandpersuadetheemployer.Thetextualdimensionreferstotheorganization,structure,andcoherenceofthetextandincludesthelanguageusedtoestablishcoherencebetweenthedifferentpartsoftheCV.
