(1928/30)GropiuswasinfluencedbytheoldArtsandCraftsmovementofthelate19thandearly20thwhichhademergedasaresponsetotheintenseindustrializationofVictorianEngland.Itsaimhadbeentobringartistsandcraftspeopletogethertoensurethesurvivalofbeautifulcraftsmanshipinthefaceofmechanizedlabour.Gropius’aimwastouniteartistsandcraftspeopleinordertoembracetechnologicaldevelopments.Itwasclearthattechnologywasthefutureandmachinesnowprovidedopportunitiestomass-produceproductsforeverydayuse.Withthisvisionofunity,theBauhausaimedtocreateanenvironmentinwhichartistscouldworkalongsidearchitectsanddesignerstocontributetothe‘buildingofthefuture’usingthisnewmachinetechnology.Asanarchitect,Gropiusbelievedthatabuildingshouldbeatthecentreoftheteachingofallthearts,hencethenameBauhaus(HouseofBuilding)andin1925theBauhausmovedfromWeimartoDessauandintoanewpurpose-builthomewhichreflectedthecoreBauhausvalues.ThebasicteachingsystemofmoderndesignpracticedandexploredbyBauhaus,hasbecomeamodelforfuturedesignofteachinginstitutions.
DesignedbyGropius,workshops,studios,classrooms,officesandlivingspacewereallhousedwithinanasymmetricalstructurefeaturingwallsofglass.Thebuildinghadafeelingofopenness,cleanlinesandsimplicityandth
