Theabolitionists,suchasHarrietBeecherStoweandWilliamLloydGarrison,wereheroesintheirowntime.BeforetheCivilWar,peopleinallsectionsofthecountrythoughtthatAfricanAmericanswereanimalsandtreatedthemassuch.DuringthereformperiodoftheJacksonianeraWilliamLloydGarrisonbegantopublishhisabolitionistnewspaperTheLiberator.InthisnewspaperhedemandedthattheAfricanAmericanslavesbesetfreeimmeadietly,withoutanycompensationtotheirowners.Becausehisviewonslaverywasagainstthecommonbeliefofthepopulationhewasnotrecievedwell.Throughouthislifehewasgivenmultipledeaththreatsandoneofhisabolitionistfriendswaskilled.HarrietBeecherStowewasanabolitionistafterGarrison’stime,butshewasrecievedinmuchofthesameway.AftertheFugitiveSlaveActof1850wasreleased,shewrotethebookUncleTom’sCabin.ItwasastoryofaslavelivingintheSouthandthecruelityofhisowner.Theinhumanessoftheownercausedmanysouthernerstobanthebookinanger,butatthesametimeitbroughttheterribleactofslaverytothelight.ManynorthernersusedthisbookasaweaponagainsttheSouth’speculiarinstitution.
RudyardKiplingoncewroteinhispoem“If,”whichsaidthatyouwillbeamanifyoucanstandupandsaywhatyoubelieveinwhenallmenaroundyoudoubtyou.Heroesmusthavethecouragetoriskeverytingtheylovetostandupfortheirselvesinthefaceofopposition.BothWilliamLloydGarrisonandHarrietBeecherStowestoodupagainstasocietywhichhadacceptedslaveryasaright.Theybelievedthatwhattheirhearttoldthemwasrightandriskedeverythingtotellthepublicwhattheybelievedin.Thesetwopeoplehavehopefullyshownotherstobelieveinthemselvesandwhattheyviewintheirhearts.
