AnalysisoftheColdWaveWeatherProcessinDalianAreafromDecember29thto30th,2009
Introduction
Thecoldwaveweatherprocessisacommonnaturaleventthatoccursinvariousregionsoftheworld.Itischaracterizedbyasuddendropintemperatureandstrongwinds,whichcanhaveasignificantimpactonhumanlivesandeconomicactivities.Inthewinterof2009,theDalianareaexperiencedacoldwaveweatherprocessfromDecember29thto30th,whichwascausedbytheinfluenceofanarcticcoldairmass.Thisstudyaimstoanalyzethecharacteristicsofthiscoldwaveweatherprocessusingmeteorologicaldataandprovidesomeinsightsintothemechanismsofsuchphenomena.
Weatherconditionsanddataanalysis
Accordingtometeorologicaldata,thecoldwaveweatherprocessinDalianstartedonDecember28th,2009,andlasteduntilDecember30th.Duringthisperiod,thelowesttemperaturereached-15.9℃,andthehighestwindspeedwas13.2m/s.Theairtemperaturedroppedsharply,andthetemperaturewasbelowfreezingthroughouttheday.Inaddition,therewasasignificantdecreaseinatmosphericpressure.FromDecember29thto30th,themaximumvalueofatmosphericpressurewas1027.4hPa,andtheminimumvaluewas1017.6hPa,indicatingthatthearcticcoldairwasrapidlyflowingintotheDalianarea,resultinginthedecreaseofthelocalatmosphericpressure.
Thedatashowedthatthewinddirectionduringthiscoldwaveweatherprocesswasmainlyfromthenorthwest,withagustywindstrengthandlongduration.Thegustywindnotonlyledtoasignificantdropintemperaturebutalsocausedsnowandiceontheroads,reducingthelevelofgroundtransportation.Moreover,thewindledtoanincreaseinthewind-chillfactor,makingtheapparenttemperaturemuchcolderthantheactualtemperature.
Intermsofprecipitation,theweatherinDalianwasmainlysunnybutdryduringthiscoldwaveweatherprocess.FromDecember29thto30th,thetotalprecipitationwasonly0.2mm.Nonetheless,duetothegustywindandlowtemperatures,thedrysnowwasblownawayandformedalayerofsnowandiceontheroads,makingtheroadconditionsdangerous.
