Abstract
ThisstudyusestheGlobalMalmquistIndex(GMI)methodtore-estimatetheprovincialtotalfactorproductivity(TFP)ofChinafrom1995to2015.TheGMImethodconsidersbothtechnicalefficiencychangeandtechnologicalchangeinestimatingTFP.OurresultsshowthatTFPgrowthinChinavariesacrossprovincesandovertime.WefindthatthecoastalprovinceshavehigherTFPgrowthrates,whilethecentralandwesternprovinceslagbehind.Inaddition,wefindthatthemajorcontributortoTFPgrowthistechnicalefficiencychange,whiletechnologicalchangehasonlyamoderateeffectonTFPgrowth.OurstudyshedsnewlightontheeconomicgrowthanddevelopmentofdifferentregionsinChina.
Introduction
Totalfactorproductivity(TFP)isameasureoftheefficiencywithwhichinputsareusedtoproduceoutputs.HighTFPgrowthiscriticalforlong-termeconomicgrowthanddevelopment.InChina,TFPhasbeenanimportantdriverofeconomicgrowthsincethe1980s(Wong,2020).However,TFPgrowthinChinahassloweddowninrecentyears,andstudieshaveshownthattherearewidevariationsinTFPgrowthacrossregions,sectors,andfirms(Chen,etal.,2018).
Thepurposeofthisstudyistore-estimatetheprovincialTFPgrowthofChinafrom1995to2015usingtheGlobalMalmquistIndex(GMI)method.TheGMImethodisanon-parametricmethodthatevaluatesproductivitychangeintermsofbothtechnicalefficiencychangeandtechnologicalchange(AfDB,2016).OurstudyprovidesamorecomprehensivepictureofTFPgrowthinChinaandshedslightontheeconomicgrowthanddevelopmentofdifferentregionsinChina.
Literaturereview
ThestudyofTFPgrowthinChinahasbeenahottopicinrecentyears.ManystudieshaveexaminedthefactorsthatcontributetoTFPgrowthinChina.Forexample,TsaiandWang(2017)foundthatforeigndirectinvestment(FDI)cansignificantlypromoteTFPgrowthinChina.WuandCao(2018)foundthathumancapitalandinnovationhaveapositiveeffectonTFPgrowthinChina.Wangetal.(2019)foundthatTFPgrowthinChinaishigherinthecoastalprovincesthaninthecentralandwesternprovinces.
