Introduction
ThePearlRiverDelta(PRD)regionisoneofthemosteconomicallydynamicregionsinChina,withalonghistoryofurbanization.TheregionincludesninecitiesinGuangdongProvinceandischaracterizedbysmallandmedium-sizedtownssurroundedbyrapidlygrowingurbanareas.Sincethe1980s,urbanizationinthePRDhasundergoneasignificanttransformation,withtheestablishmentofanetworkofcitiesandtownsthathaveintegratedwitheachothertoformafunctionalurbansystem.Thedevelopmentofthisurbansystemhasbeendrivenbyeconomicgrowth,industrialization,andarapidincreaseinpopulation.
Inthispaper,weanalyzethespatialandtemporalcorrelationsofurbanpotentialinthePRDfrom1990to2009atthecountylevel.ThisstudyaimstoprovideinsightsonthetransformationoftheurbanlandscapeinthePRDovertime.
DataandMethodology
Wecollecteddataonurbanizationfrom1990to2009inthePRD,includingdataonpopulation,GrossDomesticProduct(GDP),urbanizationrate,andurbanizationlevel.WeusedGeographicInformationSystem(GIS)technologytospatiallyanalyzeurbanpotentialintheregion.Wealsousedregressionanalysistoexaminetherelationshipbetweenurbanizationandurbanpotential.
Results
Ouranalysisshowedthatfrom1990to2009,urbanizationinthePRDincreasedrapidly,withsignificantgrowthinpopulation,GDP,andurbanizationlevel.Duringthisperiod,thePRDregiontransformedfromanagricultural-basedeconomytoamanufacturing-andservice-basedeconomy.
WefoundthatthespatialdistributionofurbanpotentialwasuneveninthePRD.Theurbanpotentialwasconcentratedinthecentralandeasternregions,reflectingthesignificantdevelopmentofthemanufacturingandservicesectorsintheseareas.Thewesternregion,whichhasaweakereconomicdevelopmentbase,hadalowerlevelofurbanpotential.
Moreover,thecorrelationanalysisshowedthaturbanizationhadapositiveimpactonurbanpotentialinthePRD.TheregressionanalysisconfirmedthaturbanizationrateandGDPhadasignificantrelationshipwithurbanpotentialintheregion.
DiscussionandConclusion
