Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthecasestudyofaChineseEnglishmajorwhohasexperiencedinterlanguagefossilizationinhislanguagedevelopment.Thisstudyisalongitudinalstudyandtracksthestudent'slanguagedevelopmentovertime. Thestudent,L,isafourth-yearEnglishmajorwhohasbeenstudyingEnglishforover10years.HehasagoodgraspofEnglishgrammarandvocabulary,buthestruggleswithspeakingandwritinginEnglish.HehashadmanyopportunitiestopracticehisEnglish,bothinclassandoutsideofclass,buthehasnotmademuchprogressoverthepastfewyears. InordertounderstandL'sinterlanguagefossilization,weconductedalongitudinalstudyoverthecourseoftwosemesters.WeanalyzedL'slanguageuseinvariouscontexts,includingclassroomdiscussions,groupprojects,andwrittenassignments.WealsoconductedinterviewswithLtogaininsightintohisattitudesandbeliefsaboutlanguagelearning. OuranalysisofL'slanguageuserevealedthatheconsistentlymadethesameerrorsingrammarandvocabulary,evenwhentheseerrorshadbeencorrectedbyhisinstructorsinthepast.HealsohadatendencytouseliteraltranslationsfromChineseinhisEnglishwriting,whichoftenresultedinawkwardsentencestructuresandincorrectwordusage. InourinterviewswithL,wediscoveredthathefeltdiscouragedbyhislackofprogressinEnglish,whichledhimtofeeldemotivatedandlesswillingtotakerisksinhislanguagelearning.HealsoexpressedfrustrationwiththedifficultyofEnglish,especiallyincomparisontohisnativelanguage. Basedonouranalysis,werecommendthatLfocusonimprovinghisspeakingandwritingskills,throughtargetedpracticeandfeedbackfrominstructors.Wealsorecommendthatheworkondevelopingagrowthmindset,whichwillenablehimtoviewlanguagelearningasaprocessthatrequireseffortandperseverance.
