LiteratureReview Theacquisitionofvowelsinasecondlanguagehasbeenstudiedextensivelyinsecondlanguageacquisitionresearch.Accordingtothenativelanguageinfluencehypothesis,learnerstendtotransferthevowelsystemsoftheirnativelanguagetothesecondlanguage,evenifitisnotappropriate.Therefore,thevowelsystemsofthetwolanguagesandthedegreeofsimilaritybetweenthemareimportantfactorsthatdeterminethelevelofdifficultyinvowelacquisition. InEnglish,thereare12vowelsounds,includingfiveshortvowels,fivelongvowelsandtwodiphthongs.Mongolian,ontheotherhand,haseightvowelsounds,includingfourshortvowelsandfourlongvowels.ThevowelsystemsofMongolianandEnglisharedifferentintermsofthenumberofvowels,thephoneticpropertiesofeachvowel,andthedistributionofvowelsoundsinwords.Therefore,itcanbeexpectedthatthevowelacquisitionforMongolianstudentslearningEnglishwillbechallenging. Methodology Thisstudyinvolves20MongolianstudentswhoarelearningEnglishasasecondlanguageinauniversityinChina.AllparticipantsareintheirsecondyearofEnglishstudyandhavereceivedformalinstructioninEnglishphoneticsandpronunciation.Thedataiscollectedthroughavowelperceptiontestandavowelproductiontest,whichweredesignedbytheresearcherandimplementedinaquietclassroomenvironment. Inthevowelperceptiontest,participantsarerequiredtolistentoarecordedEnglishwordandselectthecorrespondingvowelsoundfromamultiple-choicelistofpossiblevowelsounds.ThevowelproductiontestistohaveparticipantsreadalistofEnglishwordscontainingdifferentvowelsoundsandrecordedinaquietenvironment.TherecordingsarethenanalyzedusingPraatsoftware.
