Intoday'sglobalizedworld,Englishhasbecomeauniversallanguage,andtheabilitytoread,write,andspeakitfluentlyiscriticalforsuccessineducation,work,andeverydaylife.Fornon-Englishmajors,however,learningEnglishcanbeachallenginganddauntingtask.Non-EnglishmajorsoftenfacedifficultiesinachievingfluencyinEnglishduetothelackoffamiliaritywiththelanguageanditsnuances.However,havingstrongself-learningabilitiesinEnglishcanhelpnon-EnglishmajorsovercomethesebarriersandbecomeconfidentinusingEnglish.Thispaperaimstoexploretheimportanceofself-learningabilitiesinEnglishfornon-Englishmajorsandprovidesuggestionsonhowtodeveloptheseabilities.
ImportanceofSelf-learningAbilitiesinEnglishforNon-EnglishMajors
Self-learningabilitiesinEnglisharecriticalfornon-EnglishmajorsbecauseclassroominstructionalonemaynotbesufficienttoachievefluencyinEnglish.AstudybyGardnerandSmithin2010foundthatstudentswhoengagedinself-directedlearningweremorelikelytodeveloplanguageskillsthanthosewhoreliedsolelyonclassroominstruction.Furthermore,self-learningabilitiesinEnglishallownon-Englishmajorstolearnattheirownpaceandfocusonareasthattheyfindmostchallenging.Thisflexibilitycanbeessentialfornon-Englishmajorswhomayhaveotheracademiccommitmentsorworkobligations.
Moreover,havingstrongself-learningabilitiesinEnglishcanboostnon-Englishmajors'confidenceinusingthelanguage.Languageisnotjustaboutbeinggrammaticallycorrectorhavingagoodvocabulary;itisalsoaboutbeingabletousethelanguageconfidentlyandeffectively.Inaddition,self-learningabilitiesinEnglishcanhelpnon-Englishmajorsbecomemoreindependentlearners,whichisavaluableskillintoday'sworkplaceandacademicsettings.
