ResearchonTransparentGlass-CeramicsofB2O3-Al2O3-SiO2System
Introduction
Transparentglass-ceramicsrefertothematerialsthatexhibittransparencyinthevisiblelightrangeandhaveamicrocrystallinestructure.Itiscomposedofglassandcrystallinephasesthatareformedbycontrollednucleationandcrystallizationoftheparentglass.Comparedwithtraditionalglasses,transparentglass-ceramicshavehighermechanicalstrength,hardness,andthermalshockresistance,andthushavebroadapplicationsinmanyfields,suchasoptics,electronics,andaerospace.Amongvariousglass-ceramicsystems,B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2(BAS)systemhasreceivedconsiderableattentionduetoitshighchemicalandthermalstability,highrefractiveindex,andlowthermalexpansioncoefficient.Thispaperreviewstherecentprogressintheresearchoftransparentglass-ceramicsofBASsystem,includingtheircomposition,preparationmethods,andproperties.
Composition
TheBASsystemisaternarysystemcomposedofB2O3,Al2O3,andSiO2asthemajorcomponents,anddopantssuchasrareearthelementsandtransitionmetaloxidescanbeaddedtomodifytheirproperties.ThebasiccompositionoftheBASglass-ceramicsis50~70mol%SiO2,5~30mol%Al2O3,and5~30mol%B2O3,withsmallamountsofotheroxidecomponentssuchasCaO,Na2O,andK2O.ThemolarratioofSiO2toB2O3isgenerallyintherangeof2:1to4:1,andtheAl2O3contentislessthan30mol%.Thedopantscanbeaddedtoenhancetheluminescence,electricalconductivity,andotherpropertiesoftheglass-ceramics.
Preparationmethods
Thepreparationoftransparentglass-ceramicsofBASsystemusuallyinvolvesthreesteps:glasspreparation,nucleation,andcrystallization.Theglasscanbepreparedbytheconventionalmelt-quenchingmethod,andtheglasscompositionisadjustedaccordingtothedesiredpropertiesofthefinalglass-ceramics.ThenucleationoftheglassisachievedbyaddingnucleatingagentssuchasTiO2,ZrO2,andrareearthoxides,whichpromotetheformationofcrystallinenucleiintheglass.Thenucleatedglassisthenheat-treatedatasuitabletemperaturetopromotethegrowthofthecrystallinephases,leadingtotransparentglass-ceramics.Theheattreatmentconditions,suchasthete
