Abstract
Adhocnetworkshaverecentlygainedmuchattentionbecauseoftheirwiderangeofapplicationsinareaswheretraditionalinfrastructure-basednetworksareunavailable.Adhocnetworksarecharacterizedbytheirabilitytocreatewirelessnetworksonthefly,allowingdevicestocommunicatewithoneanotherwithoutrelyingonapre-establishedinfrastructure.However,thisflexibilitycanleadtosecurityissues.ThispaperdiscussestheuseoftheAdHocOn-DemandDistanceVector(AODV)protocolforsecuringadhocnetworkswithafocusonitsuseinadoubleauthenticationscheme.
Introduction
Adhocnetworksareformedofcommunicationdeviceswherethereisnocentralizedauthoritycontrollingthenetwork.Instead,alldevicesarefreetoconnectandcommunicatewitheachother.Itisaninfrastructure-lessnetworkthatissetupfromzerotomakeitpossiblefordevicestocommunicate.Thistypeofnetworkdoesnotrequireacentralsecurityadministration.Asaresult,itisessentialtohavearobustsetofsecurityprotocols,andtheAODVprotocolisoneofthemostpopular.
TheAODVprotocolisaroutingprotocolthatallowsnodestodiscovertheoptimalpathbetweentwonodesusingadistancevectoralgorithm.Theprotocolwasdevelopedtoaddressthechallengesofsecuringadhocnetworks.Inthispaper,wediscusshowAODVcanbemodifiedtoenhanceitssecurityusingdoubleauthentication.
Inthenextsection,weprovideabriefoverviewofadhocnetworksandtheAODVprotocol.WethendiscussthesecurityissuesthatariseinadhocnetworksandthevulnerabilitiesoftheAODVprotocol.Finally,wepresentadoubleauthenticationschemebasedonAODVthataddressesthesesecurityissues.
AdHocNetworksandtheAODVProtocol
Adhocnetworksconsistofasetofcommunicationdeviceswithoutapre-establishedinfrastructure.Thenetworkisdynamic,constantlychangingasnewdevicesconnectandexistingonesdisconnect.Thismakesroutingasignificantchallengeinadhocnetworks.Aroutingprotocolisneededtoensurethatpacketsarecorrectlydeliveredfromthesourcetothedestination.
TheAODVprotocolwasdesignedtoaddressthischallenge.Itisareactiveroutingprotocolthatusesadistancevectoralgorithmtodiscovertheoptimalpathbetweentwonodes.AODViswi
