VirtualPrivateNetwork(VPN),orinsimplerterms,networktunneling,isatechnologyusedtoestablishsecureandencryptedconnectionsbetweendevicesconnectedtotheinternet.VPNsarewidelyusedtoprovideremoteaccesstofiles,systems,andotherresourcesaswellastoprotectonlinetrafficfrompryingeyes,suchascybercriminals,governmentagencies,andinternetserviceproviders(ISPs).
OneofthemostcommonVPNprotocolsisPoint-to-PointTunnelingProtocol(PPTP).Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthetechnologyofVPN,thefeaturesandbenefitsofPPTP,andtheimplementationofPPTP.
VPNTechnologyandFeatures
TounderstandVPNs,wemustfirstunderstandtheconceptofnetworktunneling.Tunnelingisatechniquethatinvolvesencapsulatingaprotocolorpacketwithinanotherprotocol.Forinstance,VPNsencapsulateorwrapdatapacketswithanotherlayerofencryption,whichcreatesaprivatetunnel.Theprivatetunnelwithinapublicorsharednetworkenablesuserstoaccesswebsites,files,andotherresourcessecurelyandprivately.
VPNsprovideseveralsecurityfeaturesthatmakethemessentialintoday'sinterconnectedworld.Forexample,VPNsuseencryptiontoprotecttheuser'sdatafromunauthorizedaccess.Encryptionscramblesthedatasuchthatanattackerwhointerceptsthedatacannotdecipheritwithoutthecorrectdecryptionkey.Also,VPNsusetechniquessuchasauthenticationandaccesscontroltoregulateaccesstoresourceswithinthenetwork.
AnotheressentialfeatureofVPNsistheirabilitytomasktheuser'sactualIPaddress.WhenconnectedtoaVPNserver,theuser'sIPaddressisreplacedwiththatoftheVPNserver.Thismakesitdifficultforanyentitymonitoringtheuser'sonlineactivitytoidentifytheuserandtheirlocation.

PPTPisaVPNprotocolthatwasdevelopedbyMicrosoftinthe1990sandisstillinusetoday.PPTPisoneofthesimplestandmostwidelysupportedVPNprotocolsavailable.
PPTPoperatesatthedata-linklayeroftheOSImodel.Itconnectstwonetworksoveranalreadyestablishedinternetconnectionandprovidessecurecommunicationchannels.PPTPtypicallyusestheTCPprotocolonport1723toestablishconnectionsandtheGREprotocoltoencapsulateandtransmitdataacrossthetunnel.
