Introduction
ContentandLanguageIntegratedLearning(CLIL)isanapproachtolanguageteachingthatintegratestheteachingofsubjectmatterwithlanguageinstruction,enablinglearnerstolearnlanguageandcontentconcurrently.Theapproachinvolvesteachingacontentsubjectintargetlanguagetosecondlanguagelearners,sothattheylearnsubjectareacontentandlanguageconcurrently.Theapproachhasgainedpopularityasaneffectivewayofteachingforeignlanguagesandcontentinawiderangeofcontexts.ThispaperaimstodiscusstheimplementationofCLILwithafocusonCBI(Content-BasedInstruction)teachingmodelinESL(EnglishasaSecondLanguage)classrooms.

CLILandCBIarebothcontent-driventeachingmodelsthataimtointegratelanguageandcontentlearning.CLILisabroaderconceptthatencompassesdifferenttypesofcontent-integratedlanguageteachingmodels,whileCBIisaspecifictypeofCLILapproachthatfocusesonteachingcontentandlanguageincombination.CBIisanapproachtoteachingasecondlanguagebyusingsubjectmattercontenttoteachlanguageskills,sothatlearnersdeveloplanguageproficiencybylearningaboutcontentareas.TheprimarygoalofCBIistoprovidelearnerswithauthenticlanguageinput,whichcanacceleratelanguageacquisition.Byintegratingsubjectmattercontentintoalanguageprogram,learnersareexposedtolanguageinrealcontext,whichincreasestheirmotivationtolearnlanguageandcontent,andenablesthemtomakemeaningfulconnectionsbetweenlanguageandsubjectmatter.
