Introduction
Astheworldbecomesmoreglobalized,thedemandforbilingualormultilingualtalentsisontherise.Translation,asthemostfundamentalandindispensablecomponentoflanguageservice,playsacriticalroleinbridgingthelinguisticgapsamongdifferentcountriesandregions.Therefore,thetrainingofcompetenttranslatorshasbecomeincreasinglyimportant,especiallyincollegeEnglish.ThispaperaimstoprovideacomprehensiveanalysisofthechallengesandsolutionsinteachingtranslationincollegeEnglishbyexploringthemajortheoreticalfoundations,practicalstrategies,andassessmentmethods.
TheoreticalFoundations
Translationisaninterdisciplinarysubjectthatcomprisesknowledgefromdifferentfields,suchaslinguistics,culture,andliterature.Therefore,asolidtheoreticalfoundationisessentialforbothteachersandstudentstounderstandthenatureandcomplexityoftranslation.Amongthevarioustheoriesoftranslation,thefunctionalistandcommunicativeapproacheshavebeenwidelyadoptedincollegeEnglishteaching.
Thefunctionalistapproachemphasizesthepurposeandfunctionoftranslation.AccordingtoNord(1997),translationinvolvesvariousfunctions,includinginformative,expressive,operative,andaestheticfunctions.Therefore,thegoaloftranslationistotransferthesourcetext'sfunctionstothetargettextaccuratelyandeffectively.IncollegeEnglishteaching,thefunctionalistapproachcanhelpstudentsunderstandthecontextandintentionofthesourcetext,enhancetheirlanguageandculturalcompetence,andimprovetheirtranslationskills.
Thecommunicativeapproachfocusesonthecommunicationbetweenthesourceandtargetcultures.AccordingtoHatimandMason(1990),translationisacommunicativeactthatinvolvesthetransferofculturalandlinguisticknowledge.Therefore,theroleofthetranslatorisnotonlytoconveythelinguisticmeaningbutalsotobridgetheculturalgapsbetweendifferentlanguagesandcultures.IncollegeEnglishteaching,thecommunicativeapproachcanhelpstudentsdevelopinterculturalawareness,enhancetheircommunicativecompetence,andimprovetheirtranslationquality.
