Abstract:
Sea-levelriseisoneofthemostpressingconsequencesofclimatechange,posingsignificantchallengestocoastalcommunitiesworldwide.Thisstudyfocusesontheeffectsofsea-levelriseinJiangsu'scoastallowlands,aregionhighlyvulnerabletorisingwaters.Byexaminingthepotentialimplicationsthatsea-levelriseholdsforthisarea,weaimtoprovidevaluableinsightsforpolicymakersandstakeholdersindevelopingeffectiveadaptationstrategies.
Introduction:
LocatedonChina'seasterncoast,Jiangsuprovinceishometoasignificantcoastallowlandregion.Theareaischaracterizedbyaflattopography,extensivenetworksofriversandcanals,andbeinginclosevicinitytotheEastChinaSea.Theseuniquegeographicalfeaturesmaketheprovincehighlysusceptibletotheimpactsofsea-levelrise.Withclimatechangedrivingrisingsealevels,itiscrucialtounderstandthepotentialdisastrouseffectsthatmayoccurinthislow-lyingarea.
Methodology:
Thisstudyadoptsamixed-methodsapproachtoexaminethedisastrouseffectsofsea-levelriseinJiangsu'scoastallowlands.Datacollectioninvolvesacombinationofliteraturereview,analysisofhistoricalclimatedata,andinterviewswithlocalexperts.Thecollecteddataarethenanalyzedandsynthesizedtoidentifythespecificimpactsandvulnerabilitiestheregionmayfaceduetosea-levelrise.
ResultsandDiscussion:
1.IncreasedFlooding:Sea-levelriseexacerbatestheriskofcoastalfloodinginJiangsu'slow-lyingareas,threateninghumansettlements,agriculturallands,andcriticalinfrastructure.Thehigherwaterlevelsreducetheeffectivenessofnaturalbarriers,suchascoastaldunesandwetlands,makingtheregionmoresusceptibletostormsurgesandextremeweatherevents.
2.SaltwaterIntrusion:Risingsealevelsleadtotheintrusionofsaltwaterintofreshwatersystems,includingrivers,lakes,andundergroundaquifers.Thisphenomenonposesathreattotheregion'sagriculturalproductivity,assalinizationdamagescropsandaffectstheavailabilityoffreshwatersourcesforirrigationanddrinkingpurposes.
