Inrecentyears,thenumberofChinesestudentsstudyingabroadhasbeenincreasingatanunprecedentedrate,whereasthelevelofEnglishproficiencyamongChinesestudentsappearstovarywidely.Inthisessay,IwilloffersomeobservationsandreflectionsontheEnglishlanguageenhancementofChinesestudentsstudyingabroad.
Firstofall,itisnothardtonoticethatmanyChinesestudentsencounterdifficultieswithEnglish,especiallyinacademicsettings.Inclasses,theyoftenstruggletofollowthelectures,comprehendthereadings,andexpresstheirideasfluentlyandaccurately.Meanwhile,insocialandculturalcontexts,theymayfinditchallengingtocommunicatewithnativespeakersorparticipateingroupactivitiesthatrequireEnglishproficiency.Thesechallengesarenotonlyahindrancetotheiracademicperformancebutalsoasourceofstressandfrustration.
OnepossiblereasonforthisisthatmanyChinesestudentsmayhavereceivedinadequateEnglishlanguageinstructionintheirhomecountry.Duetovariousfactors,suchasthelargeclasssize,lackofopportunitiesfororalpractice,andafocusongrammarandvocabularyovercommunicativecompetence,theEnglishlevelofmanyChinesestudentsremainssuboptimal.Therefore,manystudentsfeelintimidatedinacademicenvironmentswhereEnglishistheprimarylanguageofinstructionandcommunication.
GiventheimportanceofEnglishproficiencyforthesuccessofChinesestudentsstudyingabroad,someuniversitieshaveimplementedmeasurestohelpthemimprovetheirlanguageskills.Forinstance,theyofferEnglishlanguageclassesorsupplementaryprograms,hirebilingualtutorsormentors,providelanguagesupportservices,andorganizeextracurricularactivitiestopromotelanguagelearningandcross-culturalexchange.Additionally,someuniversitiesrequirestudentstotakeEnglishproficiencytests,suchasTOEFLorIELTS,asacriterionforadmissionorgraduation,whichcanmotivatestudentstostriveforhigherEnglishproficiency.
