1.Introduction
TheoutbreakofCOVID-19pandemicintheearlymonthsof2020hasdisruptedthenormalfunctioningofmanysectorsacrosstheglobe,includingtheeducationsector.Indeed,thepandemichashadaprofoundimpactonmanyinternationalstudentsstudyingabroad.ThispaperfocusesontheissuesrelatedtoonlinelearningfacedbymechanicalandelectricalengineeringstudentsduringtheCOVID-19pandemicandoffersrecommendationstoovercomethesedifficulties.
2.ChallengesinOnlineLearning
Onlinelearninginvolvestheuseoftechnologytoaccesseducationalresourcesandlearningmaterials.Nevertheless,thepandemichasposedsomechallengesintheabilityofstudentstoaccessthenecessarylearningequipmentandresources.Forexample,somestudentsmayfacedifficultyaccessingfastandreliableinternet.Also,somemaynothavetheequipmentrequiredforonlinelearningsuchaslaptopsandsmartphones.Moreover,someinternationalstudentsfacelanguagebarrierswhichcanincreasethedifficultyofunderstandingcoursecontent.Thesechallengeshavehinderedtheacademicprogressofmanystudents.
3.StrategiestoEnhanceOnlineLearning
a)ProvidingEducationalResources
Institutionsshouldmakeeveryefforttomakeeducationalcontentreadilyavailabletoonlinelearners.Forinstance,theprovisionofinteractivecontentsuchasvideos,games,andonlineforumscanbebeneficialtohelpstudentstobetterunderstandcomplexcoursematerial.Educationalcontentshouldalsobemadeavailableinvariousformatstocatertostudentswithdifferentlearningstyles.
b)InteractiveLearningSessions
Onlinelearningcansometimesfeelisolating,andstudentsmayfeeldisconnectedfromtheirteachersandclassmates.Onewaytoaddressthislimitationistoarrangeforinteractivelearningsessions.Virtualclassroomsthatenablestudentsandteacherstointeractinreal-timecanprovideasenseofcommunityamonglearners.Thesesessionscanalsopromoteteamworkandcollaborationamongstudentstofacilitatelearningandimproveacademicoutcomes.
