Name-ificationinEnglish:AnInvestigationandAnalysisofNounUsagebyEnglishMajors
Introduction
AsEnglishmajors,weareoftenexposedtotherichandcomplexnuancesoftheEnglishlanguage.Oneaspectoflanguagethathascometoourattentionistheuseof“name-ification,”orthetendencytoturnnon-nounsintonounsbyaddingsuffixessuchas“-ment,”“-tion,”“-ity,”andsoon.Wehaveobservedthisphenomenoninbothformalandinformalcontextsandrealizedthatname-ificationcanhaveagreatimpactonhowlanguageisperceivedandused.Thus,weconductedasurveyandanalysistoexploretheextentandimplicationsofname-ificationinEnglish.
Methodology
Ourstudywasconductedusingaself-administeredonlinequestionnaire,whichwasdistributedtoEnglishmajorsfromseveraluniversitiesinChina.Thequestionnaireconsistedoftwomainparts:thefirstpartaskedforbackgroundinformationabouttherespondents,suchastheirgender,age,andEnglishproficiencylevel.Thesecondpartcontainedopen-endedquestionsthatallowedtherespondentstogiveexamplesofname-ificationinEnglish,describetheirpersonalexperienceswithname-ification,andexpresstheiropinionsonthetrend.
Findings
Atotalof150respondentscompletedthesurvey,ofwhich80werefemaleand70weremale.Themajorityoftherespondentsfellbetweentheagesof18and24,withasmallproportionovertheageof25.AlmostallofthemwereEnglishmajors,andthevastmajorityconsideredthemselvestohaveahighlevelofEnglishproficiency.
Intermsofname-ification,therespondentsprovidedawealthofexamples,rangingfromthecommonandwidelyaccepted(e.g.“management,”“communication,”“entertainment”)tothemorecreativeandpotentiallycontentious(e.g.“impactfulness,”“disruptiveness,”“replacability”).Manyoftheseexamplescamefromacademicorprofessionalfields,suchasbusiness,science,andtechnology.Therespondentsalsonotedthatname-ificationcanbeusedforemphasis,precision,orconvenience,aswellasforthepurposeofjargonizingorinflatinglanguage.
