ReadingSpeed ReadingspeedreferstohowquicklystudentscanreadtextsinEnglish.Oneimportantfactoraffectingreadingspeedisthelevelofvocabularyknowledge.Ifstudentshaveagoodunderstandingofthewords,theycanreadmorequicklyandfluently.Butiftheyencounterunfamiliarwords,theymayslowdownorevenstoptolookthemupinadictionary.Anotherfactorthataffectsreadingspeedispriorknowledgeofthetopic.Ifstudentshavesomebackgroundknowledgeofthetopic,theycanreadmorequicklyandcomprehendthetextmoreeasily. Whilereadingspeediscrucialforreadingcomprehension,itisnotalwayseasytoincreasereadingspeed.Someresearchhassuggestedthatspeedreadingtechniquesmaybehelpful,buttheyrequirealotofpracticeandmaynotbesuitableforallstudents.Instead,helpingstudentsdeveloptheirvocabularyknowledgeandpriorknowledgeofthetopicmaybemoreeffective.Forexample,teacherscanintroducenewvocabularybeforereadingatext,andprovideactivitiestoactivatepriorknowledgeandbuildschema. ReadingFatigue Readingfatigue,ontheotherhand,referstothementalandphysicalexhaustionthatstudentsmayexperiencewhenreadingtextsinEnglishforprolongedperiods.Thisfatiguecanleadtoadecreasedabilitytoconcentrate,lowerlevelsofmotivation,andevenphysicaldiscomfortsuchaseyestrain. Thereareseveralreasonswhyreadingfatigueoccurs.Firstly,readinginaforeignlanguageisoftenmorecognitivelydemandingthanreadinginone'snativelanguage.Studentshavetoengageinmorecognitiveprocessingtounderstandandinterpretthetext,whichconsumesmorementalenergy.Secondly,readingonacomputerortabletcanalsoincreasefatigue,asthescreen'slightandglarecanstraintheeyes.Finally,tirednessandboredomcanalsocontributetoreadingfatigue.
