Introduction
Smokedetectorsandfirealarmsareessentialcomponentsoffiresafetysystems.Theycandetectfireandalertoccupantstoevacuatethebuildingtopreventinjuryorlossoflife.However,theeffectivenessofsmokedetectorsandfirealarmsdecreasesovertimeduetovariousfactorssuchaschangesinenvironment,outdatedtechnology,andwearandtear.Therefore,itisimportanttoreplacesmokedetectorsandfirealarmsafteracertainperiodtomaintaintheirefficiency.ThispaperdiscussesthestudyconductedbytheBuildingResearchEstablishment(BRE)onthebestreplacementintervalforphotoelectricsmokedetectorsandfirealarms.
Background
Smokedetectorsandfirealarmsweredevelopedinthemid-20thcenturytoprotectoccupantsandpropertiesfromfires.Thesedevicesaredesignedtodetectsmoke,heat,orflameandalertoccupantsthroughaudibleandvisiblesignals.Smokedetectorsusedifferenttechnologiessuchasionization,photoelectric,anddual-sensortodetectsmoke.Firealarmsaretypicallyconnectedtoacentralcontrolpanelandcanbeactivatedmanuallyorautomaticallyincaseofafire.
Smokedetectorsandfirealarmshavegreatlyimprovedfiresafetyandhavecontributedtoasignificantreductioninfirefatalities.However,theireffectivenessdecreasesovertimeduetovariousfactors,includingexposuretodustanddebris,agingcomponents,andchangesintheenvironmentalconditions.Therefore,itisnecessarytoreplacesmokedetectorsandfirealarmsperiodicallytoensuretheirproperfunctioning.
BREStudy
TheBREconductedastudytodeterminethebestreplacementintervalforphotoelectricsmokedetectorsandfirealarms.Thestudyfocusedonphotoelectricsmokedetectors,whicharemorecommonlyusedinresidentialbuildingsthanionizationdetectorsduetotheirsuperiorperformanceindetectingsmolderingfires.
Thestudyinvolvedlaboratorytestingofnewsmokedetectorsandfirealarmsandusedstatisticalanalysistodeterminetheperformanceofthesedevicesafteracertainperiod.Thedatacollectedfromthestudyindicatedthatalthoughtherewasaslightdecreaseinthesensitivityofphotoelectricsmokedetectorsandfirealarmsovertime,theystillperformedadequatelyaftertenyears.
