AnalysisofFloodRiskandVulnerabilityofFarmersinPoyangLakeArea
Abstract
PoyangLakeareaisoneoftheregionsinChinathatishighlysusceptibletofloodsduetoitsuniquegeographicallocationandhydrologicalcharacteristics.Inrecentyears,thefrequencyandintensityoffloodshaveincreasedsignificantly,leadingtolossesoflives,properties,andinfrastructure.Inthisstudy,weaimtoanalyzethefloodriskandvulnerabilityoffarmersinthePoyangLakearea.Theresultsshowthatfarmersintheareaarehighlyvulnerabletofloodsduetotheirrelianceonagricultureandthelackofadequatefloodprotectionmeasures.Thefindingsofthisstudycanbeusedtoinformpoliciesandinterventionstargetedatreducingfloodriskandvulnerabilityintheregion.
Introduction
PoyangLakeareaislocatedinthecentralpartofChina,comprisingninecountiesandtwocitiesinJiangxiprovince.Theregionischaracterizedbyitsextensivewetlands,rivernetworks,andavastwatercatchmentareaofapproximately160,000squarekilometers.Poyanglake,whichisthelargestfreshwaterlakeinChina,isalsolocatedintheregion(Lietal.,2014).TheregionishighlysusceptibletofloodsduetoitslocationinthelowerYangtzeRiverbasin,whichispronetosevereweatherconditionssuchastyphoonsandheavyrainfall(Xuetal.,2015).Inrecentyears,thefrequencyandintensityoffloodshaveincreasedsignificantlyduetoclimatechangeandotherhumanactivities,leadingtolossesoflives,properties,andinfrastructure(Zhangetal.,2014).
DespitethesevereimpactsoffloodsinthePoyangLakearea,thevulnerabilityoffarmersintheregionhasreceivedlittleattention.Thisstudyaimstofillthisknowledgegapbyanalyzingfloodriskandvulnerabilityoffarmersintheregion.
Methodology
WeconductedaliteraturereviewofexistingstudiesonfloodsinthePoyangLakeareaandthenusedsemi-structuredinterviewstogatherdatafromfarmersintheregion.Weselectedthreecountiesintheregion,namelyDuchang,Hukou,andPoyang,forourstudy.Thesamplesizefortheinterviewswas120farmers,andweusedpurposivesamplingtoensurethatthesamplewasrepresentativeofthedifferentdemographicgroupsintheregion.Weanalyzedthedatausingdescriptivestatisticsandregr
