Abstract
Translationisanimportantaspectoflanguagelearningandculturalexchange.Intheteachingoftranslation,itisimportanttodevelopstudents'culturalandpragmaticcompetencetoenhancetheirtranslationabilities.Thispaperexploresthecultivationofstudents'culturalandpragmaticcompetenceinEnglishtranslationteachingattheuniversitylevel.Itdiscussestheimportanceofbuildingstudents'culturalawareness,providesvariousteachingstrategiestodeveloptheirpragmaticcompetence,andpresentssuggestionsforfutureresearch.
Introduction
Theteachingoftranslationhasalwaysbeenanessentialelementoflanguagelearningandculturalexchange.Translationisanactivitythatinvolvesthetransferofmeaningfromonelanguagetoanotherwhilepreservingthecommunicativeintentoftheoriginaltext.Therefore,itisessentialforstudentstohaveastrongculturalandpragmaticunderstandingtotranslateaccuratelyandeffectively.
However,theimportanceofculturalandpragmaticcompetenceintheteachingoftranslationisoftenoverlooked.Culturalcompetencereferstotheknowledge,skills,andattitudesneededtounderstand,appreciate,andadapttodifferentculturalcontexts.Pragmaticcompetencereferstotheabilitytouselanguageappropriatelyaccordingtothecontextandtheinterlocutor.InEnglishtranslationteaching,thedevelopmentofculturalandpragmaticcompetenceiscrucialbecauseithelpsstudentstounderstandthemessagesofthesourcetextandtransferthemeffectivelyintothetargetlanguage.
Thispaperaimstoexplorethecultivationofstudents'culturalandpragmaticcompetenceinEnglishtranslationteachingattheuniversitylevel.Itdiscussestheimportanceofbuildingstudents'culturalawareness,providesvariousteachingstrategiestodeveloptheirpragmaticcompetence,andpresentssuggestionsforfutureresearch.
