Languageisacomplexsystemusedtoconveymeaning,thoughtsandideas.Wordsarethebuildingblocksofanylanguageandtheirmeaningplaysasignificantroleincommunication.However,manywordsinEnglishhavemultiplemeaningswhichcancreateconfusionandambiguityincommunication.Inthispaper,wewillexplorethephenomenonofmultiplemeaningwordsinEnglishandinvestigatehowpeoplemakesenseofthem.Wewillalsolookatstrategiesthatcanbeusedtoimprovememoryandrecallofworddefinitions.
WhatareMultipleMeaningWords?
Multiplemeaningwords,alsoknownashomonyms,arewordsthathavemorethanonemeaning.Thesewordscanbechallengingbecausethecontextinwhichtheyareusedcangreatlyaffecttheirintendedmeaning.Forexample,theword“bank”canmeanafinancialinstitutionorthesideofariver.Theword“bat”canmeanawingedmammalorapieceofsportingequipment.Similarly,theword“bark”canrepresenttheoutercoveringofatreeorthesoundadogmakes.
Multiplemeaningwordscanbeclassifiedintodifferentcategoriesbasedontheirmeanings.Somewordshavemultiplemeaningsthatarerelated,suchas“watch”whichcanmeanatimepieceortoobserveclosely.Othershavemeaningsthatarecompletelyunrelated,suchas“bear”whichcanrefertoananimalortoenduresomething.
UnderstandingMultipleMeaningWords
Whilemultiplemeaningwordscancreateconfusion,therearestrategiesthatcanhelpwiththeirunderstanding.Thefirststepistopayattentiontothecontextinwhichthewordisbeingused.Thiscanprovideimportantcluesabouttheintendedmeaning.Forexample,inthesentence“Idepositedmypaycheckatthebank”,wecaninferthattheword“bank”referstoafinancialinstitution.Incontrast,inthesentence“Theboysatonthebankandfishedfortrout”,wecaninferthattheword“bank”referstothesideofariver.
Anotherstrategyistolookforotherwordsinthesentencethatcanhelpclarifythemeaningofthemultiplemeaningword.Forexample,inthesentence“Thebatflewoutofthecave”,wecaninferthattheword“bat”referstoawingedmammalbecauseitisassociatedwiththeverb“flew”.
