Englishisoneofthemostimportantlanguageskillsintoday’sglobalizedworld.InChina,Englishhasbeenacompulsorysubjectinprimaryandsecondaryschools,andmanystudentscontinuetostudyitincollege.However,therearestillsomechallengesinteachingEnglish,andspecifically,teachingEnglishreadingskills.ChinesestudentsoftenencounterdifficultiesincomprehendingandanalyzingEnglishtextsduetolinguisticandculturaldifferences.Toaddressthisissue,manyChineseuniversitieshavedevelopedtheirown“China-style”Englishreadingteachingmethods.ThispaperaimstoexploretheseuniqueapproachestoteachingEnglishreadingskillsinChineseuniversities.
ChallengesinTraditionalEnglishReadingTeaching
ChinesestudentsoftenstrugglewithcomprehensionandanalysisofEnglishtextsduetovariousreasons.Firstly,thedifferencesinlanguagestructuresandgrammarrulesbetweenChineseandEnglishcanleadtoconfusionandmisunderstandings.Secondly,theculturaldifferencesbetweenChinaandEnglish-speakingcountriescanaffectstudents’abilitytounderstandandinterpretthelanguageandtext.Thirdly,ChinesestudentsoftenhavelimitedexposuretotheEnglishlanguage,whichcanleadtopoorvocabularyandreadingcomprehensionskills.
