Introduction
Englishlearnersusedictionariesasoneoftheirprimarytoolstoimprovetheirlanguageskills.Inrecentyears,anincreasingnumberofonlineEnglishlearningdictionarieshasbeendeveloped,makingEnglishlanguagelearningmoreaccessibletolearners.However,theusageandeffectivenessofthesedictionariesremainunclear.UnderstandingtheusagestatusofEnglishlearningdictionariesandtheireffectivenessinenhancinglanguageskillscanhelpEnglishlearnerstomakethebestuseofthesetools,thusimprovingtheirlanguageproficiency.ThisresearchaimstoinvestigatetheusagestatusofEnglishlearningdictionariesandtheireffectivenessinenhancingthelanguageskillsoflearners.
Methodology
Thestudyemployedasurveyquestionnairetocollectdatafromasampleof200Englishlearnersfromdifferentcountries.Thequestionnairewasdevelopedwiththeinputoflanguageexpertsandcoveredquestionsonthetypesofdictionariesused,thefrequencyofusage,andtheeffectivenessofusingdictionariesinimprovinglanguageskills.Thequestionnairesurveywasconductedonline,andthedatawereanalyzedusingdescriptivestatisticsandinferentialstatistics.
Results
TheresultsofthestudyshowthatEnglishlearnersprimarilyuseonlinedictionaries,with75%oftheparticipantsreportingthattheyuseonlinedictionaries.Over50%oftheparticipantsusebothonlineandprintdictionaries,andonly10%oftheparticipantsuseprintdictionariesexclusively.Themostcommonlyuseddictionarytypesarebilingualandmonolingualdictionaries,withmorethan70%oftheparticipantsreportingusingthesedictionarytypes.Frequencyofdictionaryusewasfoundtovaryacrossparticipants,with25%usingdictionariesmorethanonceadayand15%notusingdictionariesatall.Themostcommonusefordictionarieswastolookupthemeaningsofwords,followedbycheckingthepronunciation,grammar,andusageofwords.
Regardingtheeffectivenessofusingdictionariesinlanguagelearning,themajorityoftheparticipantsbelievethatusingdictionariesisaneffectivewaytoimprovetheirlanguageskills.Thisisevidencedbythefactthat85%oftheparticipantsreportedthattheyfeltmoreconfidentinexpressingthemselvesinEnglishwhenusingdict
