OverviewofEnglishReadingInstruction Englishreadinginstructioncanbecategorizedintofourmajorapproaches:thebottom-upapproach,thetop-downapproach,theinteractiveapproach,andtheschematheoryapproach. Thebottom-upapproachemphasizestheimportanceofmasteringthelanguage'sbasiccomponents,includingphonics,vocabulary,andgrammaticalstructures,beforemovingtomoreadvancedreadingskills.Thisapproachassumesthatlearnersmustfirstlearnthebuildingblocksoflanguagetoappreciatemorecomplextexts.Thisapproachincludesteachingdecodingskills,sightwords,andbasicgrammarrules. Thetop-downapproach,ontheotherhand,placesahigheremphasisonmeaningandtheroleofbackgroundknowledgeinreadingcomprehension.Ithighlightsthesignificanceoflearners'priorknowledgetocomprehendandgetmeaningfromthetext.Thisapproachfocusesonteachingreadingstrategiessuchasskimming,scanning,andpredictiontoenablelearnerstoconstructmeaningfromthetexteffectively.
