WiththeincreasingemphasisonEnglishlanguagelearning,teachingreadinghasbecomeasignificantaspectofEnglishteaching.Theabilitytoreadefficientlyisthefoundationoflearninginmanyacademicdisciplines,andhenceitiscrucialtoexploreeffectivewaystoteachreadinginEnglish.Inthispaper,weexplorethevariousfactorsthatinfluenceEnglishreadingskills,thedifferentapproachestoteachingreading,andsomeeffectivestrategiestoimprovereadingabilities.
FactorsAffectingEnglishReadingSkills
TounderstandthefactorsthataffectEnglishreadingskills,itisimportanttofirstassessthecognitiveprocessesinvolvedinreading.Readingisacomplexprocessthatinvolvesvariouscognitiveprocessessuchasdecoding,comprehension,andbackgroundknowledge.Hence,factorsthataffectthesecognitiveprocessescaninfluencethequalityofreading.SeveralfactorsthatcanimpactEnglishreadingskillsare:
1.Vocabulary:ThesizeoftheEnglishvocabularyofthereadercansignificantlyinfluencetheirreadingability.Greaterthevocabulary,thebetterthereader'sabilitytorecognizeandcomprehendwords.
2.Phonics:TheabilitytodecodeEnglishwordsisessentialforreading.TheEnglishlanguageishighlyphonetic,andtherefore,masteringphonicsisimportanttodecodewordsaccurately.
