Introduction
Ashealthcaresystemsgloballycontinuetoevolve,sodoesthedemandforahighlyskilledhealthcareworkforce.Withtheadvancementoftechnology,internationalcollaborationandglobalization,theworldhasbecomeamuchsmallerplace.Thishasbeenaccompaniedbyagrowingtrendtowardsinternationalizationinhighereducation,withanincreasingnumberofstudentschoosingtoundertaketheirstudiesabroad.Inparticular,medicalandpharmaceuticalstudieshaveproventobepopulardegreechoicesforinternationalstudents.However,studentsfaceachallengingtimewhenitcomestothelanguagebarrierthatcanoftenmakelearningdifficult.
English-taughtcoursesinmedicalandpharmaceuticaleducationarebecomingincreasinglyprevalentasinstitutionsrecognizethebenefitsofincreasedforeignenrolment.Asignificantissuewithteachingnon-nativespeakersisteachingstatisticalanalysis.ThispaperprovidesanoverviewofthechallengesofteachingstatisticalanalysisinEnglishtonon-nativespeakersinmedicalandpharmaceuticaleducation,alongwithproblemswithmaterials,teachingmethods,andstrategiestoovercometheseissues.
ChallengesofTeachingStatisticalAnalysisinEnglishtoNon-NativeSpeakers
Statisticscoursesinvolvearangeofabstractconcepts,specializedterminology,mathematicalsymbols,andunfamiliarstructuresthatmaybechallengingtounderstand,particularlyforstudentsforwhomEnglishisasecondlanguage.Vocabularyitemsandgrammaticalstructuresusedinstatisticsareveryparticular,requiringthestudentstohaveastronggraspoftheEnglishlanguage.Non-nativespeakingmedicalandpharmaceuticalstudentsmayhavedifficultiesunderstandingsophisticatedmathematicalexpressionsandinterpretinggraphs,whichcanleadtomisunderstandingandfrustration.
