Introduction
Legallanguageisaspecializedlanguageusedinthecontextoflaw,whichisdistinctfromotherformsoflanguageintermsofitsvocabulary,syntax,andpragmaticfeatures.Theuseoflegallanguageisanessentialaspectofthelegalprofessionasithelpstoensureclarity,precision,andaccuracyinlegalcommunication.ThisstudyaimstoexplorethevocabularyfeaturesofEnglishlegallanguageandquantifythemthroughmeasuringcertainlinguisticfeatures.
LiteratureReview
Severalstudieshaveexaminedthefeaturesoflegallanguage,particularlyinthecontextofEnglish.AccordingtoPalmer(2001),Englishlegallanguageischaracterizedbyarelativelysmallvocabulary,whichishighlytechnicalandoftenderivedfromLatinandFrenchorigin.Thistechnicalvocabularyisusedtoexpresspreciseandunambiguousmeaningstoavoidanyconfusionorambiguitythatcouldariseinlegalcontexts.
Bhatia(1993)highlightstheimportanceoflinguisticregisterinlegalcommunication,whichinvolvestheselectionofwords,syntax,andstyleappropriateforspecificcontexts.Legaldiscourseofteninvolvestheuseofimpersonallanguage,passivevoice,nominalization,andcomplexsentencestructure.Thislinguisticregisterisintendedtodeliveraformalandobjectivetonewhileavoidinganyemotionalorsubjectivebias.
Methodology
ThisstudywillemployaquantitativeapproachtomeasurecertainlinguisticfeaturesoflegallanguageinEnglish.ThecorpususedtoconducttheanalysiswillbetheBritishNationalCorpus(BNC),whichconsistsofover100millionwordsofEnglishtextsfromarangeofgenresandsources.
Thefirstfeaturethatwillbemeasuredisthelexicaldiversityoflegallanguagecomparedtootherregisters.Lexicaldiversityisameasureoftherangeofwordsusedinatextoracorpus.Itiscalculatedbydividingthenumberofdifferentwordsbythetotalnumberofwords.Thehypothesisisthatlegallanguagewillhavealowerlexicaldiversitythanotherregistersduetoitsuseoftechnicalvocabulary.
Thesecondfeaturethatwillbemeasuredisthefrequencyofnominalizationinlegallanguagecomparedtootherregisters.Nominalizationisaprocessbywhichaverboranadjectiveisturnedintoanoun.Itisacommonfeatureoflegallanguageasithelpstocr
