Introduction:
Structuralengineersoftenrelyonvariousstrengtheningtechniquestoenhancethestrengthandstabilityofreinforcedconcrete(RC)structures.Externalprestressedreinforcementisawidelyadoptedmethodtoimprovetheload-bearingcapacityandstiffnessofRCframebeams.However,theinfluenceoflateralrestraintonsuchbeamshasnotbeenextensivelystudied.Hence,thispaperaimstoprovideatheoreticalanalysisoftheeffectsoflateralrestraintonthebehaviorandperformanceofexternallyprestressedRCframebeams.
1.OverviewofExternalPrestressedReinforcement:
1.1ConceptandBenefits:
Externalprestressedreinforcementreferstotheapplicationofpre-tensionedorpost-tensionedtendonsontheexternalsurfaceofRCmembers.Thistechniquehelpsininducingcompressionforcesinthemember,therebyimprovingitsload-carryingcapacity,reducingdeflection,andenhancingoverallstructuralperformance.
1.2ApplicationScope:
Externalprestressedreinforcementiscommonlyusedinbridges,buildings,andotherstructureswherelargespans,heavyloads,orhighmaterialductilityareinvolved.Itprovidesaneffectivesolutiontoretrofitexistingstructuresorconstructnewoneswithoptimizedstructuralcapacity.
