LastmonthanextremelyrareSiberianRubythroatbirdwasseeninScotland,sendinghundredsofbirdwatchersnorthinthehopeofcatchingaglimpseofthiscolourfulAsianbeauty.Anotherveryuncommonbird,thebuffleheadduckwascitedinCornwellandcausedsimilarexcitement.“Icouldn’tbelieveit,”saidEvans.“Thepoorthingwascompletelyknackered.ItmusthavebeenblowntoEnglandbythestormswhiletryingtoflyfromCanadatothesouthernUnitedStatesforthewinter.That’s3000miles!”
Evanssaidthatglobalwarmingoverthepastdecadewasplayingakeyroleintransformingbirdmovementsacrosstheworld.Inaddition,meltingArcticseaicemayalsobeopeningupbirdflightpathsovertheNorthPole,makingiteasierforbirdsfromthePacific—suchastheslaty-backedgullandtuftedpuffin,bothofwhichappearedinLondonearlierthisyear—toreachBritain.
