Abstract
FemtocellsarebecominganincreasinglypopulartechnologyforimprovingtheperformanceofWCDMAsystems.ThispaperpresentsastudyontheperformanceofWCDMAsystemsdeployedunderfemtocellenvironments.Theimpactoffemtocelldeploymentonvariousperformancemetricssuchascapacity,coverage,andinterferenceareanalyzed.TheresultsshowthatfemtocelldeploymentcansignificantlyimprovethecapacityandcoverageofWCDMAsystems,whileatthesametimemitigatingtheinterferenceissues.Overall,femtocelldeploymentisapromisingsolutionforenhancingtheperformanceofWCDMAsystemsinindoorenvironments.
Introduction
Withtheincreaseindemandforwirelesscommunicationservices,WCDMA(WidebandCodeDivisionMultipleAccess)hasbecomeapopulartechnologyforsupportinghigh-speeddatatransmission.However,WCDMAsystemshavelimitationsintermsofcoverageandcapacity,especiallyinindoorenvironments.Thisisbecausethesignalstransmittedbyoutdoorbasestations(NodeBs)areoftenattenuatedorblockedbybuildings,resultinginpoorsignalstrengthandqualityinsidebuildings.
FemtocellsofferapotentialsolutiontotheindoorcoverageandcapacityissuesinWCDMAsystems.Femtocellsarelow-power,small-scalebasestationsthatcanbeinstalledinindoorenvironments,suchashomes,offices,andpublicspaces,toprovidelocalizedwirelesscoverage.Femtocellsuseadifferentfrequencyfromtheoutdoormacrocellnetwork,enablingmultipleuserstosharethesamefrequencybandwithoutinterference.
Inthispaper,westudytheimpactoffemtocelldeploymentontheperformanceofWCDMAsystems.Specifically,weanalyzetheeffectoffemtocelldeploymentoncapacity,coverage,andinterference,usingsimulatedscenariosandreal-worldexperiments.
CapacityAnalysis
ThecapacityofaWCDMAsystemreferstothemaximumnumberofusersthatcanbeaccommodatedwithinthesystemwhilemaintainingasatisfactorylevelofservicequality.Ingeneral,thecapacityofaWCDMAsystemislimitedbytheavailablespectrumandtheinterferencefromotherusers.
FemtocelldeploymentcanimprovethecapacityofWCDMAsystemsbyincreasingthenumberofbasestationsandreducingtheinterference.Theuseoffemtocellsallowsfo
