I.Introduction
TheArcticregionisundergoingrapidenvironmentalchangesduetoclimatechangeandincreasedhumanactivities.ThesechangeshavesignificantimplicationsfortheconservationofArcticmarinemammals,whicharefundamentaltotheregion'sbiodiversityandecologicalbalance.ThispaperaimstoexaminetheconservationofArcticmarinemammalswithintheframeworkofinternationallawandexplorethechallengesandopportunitiesfortheirlong-termprotection.
II.InternationalLegalFramework
A.UnitedNationsConventionontheLawoftheSea(UNCLOS)
UNCLOSprovidesthelegalframeworkfortheconservationandsustainableuseofmarineresourcesintheArcticregion.Statesareresponsiblefortheconservationofmarinemammalswithintheirjurisdictionandmusttakeappropriatemeasurestoprotecttheirhabitats.
B.InternationalWhalingCommission(IWC)
TheIWCregulatesthehuntingofwhales,includingsomespeciesfoundintheArctic.Itpromotessustainablewhalingpracticesandsupportstheconservationofcetaceansthroughresearch,monitoring,andinternationalcooperation.
C.ConventiononInternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesofWildFaunaandFlora(CITES)
CITESregulatestheinternationaltradeofendangeredspecies,includingwalruses,polarbears,andsomesealspecies.Itaimstoensurethatsuchtradedoesnotthreatentheirsurvivalinthewild.
III.ChallengestoArcticMarineMammalConservation
A.ClimateChange
Therapidmeltingofseaicedisruptstheecosystemonwhichmarinemammalsdepend.Lossoficereduceshabitatavailability,affectsmigratorypatterns,andalterspreydistribution,leadingtopotentialdeclinesinpopulationviability.
B.PollutionandContaminants
Pollutants,includingheavymetalsandPersistentOrganicPollutants(POPs),accumulateinArcticmarinemammalsthroughthefoodchain.Thesepollutantshaveadverseeffectsontheirreproductivesystems,immunefunction,andoverallhealth.
