Istanbul(CNN)--TurkishpoliceonSundayarrestedseniorjournalists,mediaexecutivesandeventhescriptwriterforapopulartelevisionseriesonchargesof"forming,leadingandbeingamemberofanarmedterroristorganization."
ThemorethantwodozenarrestsfollowedanotherseriesofpoliceraidsonDecember17oflastyear,inwhichprominentsupportersofthegovernment,includingthesonsofministersandtheheadofastate-ownedbank,wereinterrogatedonchargesofcorruption.
Inalmostallcases,thoseyear-oldchargeshavebeendropped.
ThecurrentcropofdetentionsarepeopleassociatedwiththeinfluentialGulenreligiousmovementandwhosefollowershaveanactivenetworkofschoolsandbusinesses.Thegovernmentaccusesthemovementofinfiltratingthepoliceandjudiciary.
AmongthosenowdetainedareEkremDumanli,editor-in-chiefofZaman,thecountry'swidestcirculatingnewspaper.
Policearrivingat7.30a.m.weregreetedbyscoresofprotestersshouting"afreemediacannotbesilenced."
JournalistsandGulensupportershadmountedavigilaftertweetsfrom"Fuatavni"--areliablebutanonymoussource--hadwarnedoftheraid.PoliceretreatedonlytoreappearintheafternoonwhenDumanligavehimselfupvoluntarily.
AlsoincustodyareHidayetKaraca,theheadoftheGulen-affiliatedSamanyolutelevision,aswellasthedirector,producersandwriteroflong-runningpoliticalsoapoperasthatcastaspersionsonthegovernment'sattempttobrokeradealwithKurdishmilitantsbydepictingitasaconspiracyhatchedinthecorridorsofTehran.
Forthepastyear,thegovernmenthasbeenwagingacampaignagainsttheIslamicspiritualleaderFethullahGulen,wholivesinself-imposedexileinthePoconoMountainsofPennsylvania.Inthepro-governmentpress,eventhewordPennsylvaniahasbecomesynonymouswithaconspiracytocreatewhatiscalleda"parallel"statebyoverthrowingtheelectedgovernmentofRecepTayyipErdogan,formerPrimeMinisterandnowPresident.
TheGulen-affiliatedmovementcountersthattheseaccusationsaresimplyasmokescreentocoverupcorruptioninhighplaces,includingthepresident'sownfamily.Forthepast1
