Introduction
TheAnalectsofConfuciusisconsideredasoneofthemostimportantworksinChineseliterature.DuetoitssignificantinfluenceonmodernChinesesocietyandculture,itwastranslatedintovariousforeignlanguages.ThetwomostprominentEnglishtranslationsofTheAnalectsofConfuciusarebyArthurWaleyandJamesLegge.However,inthispaper,wewillcompareandcontrastthetranslationsofAnLeZheandGuHongming.Byexaminingthetranslationsofbothauthors,thepaperaimstoaddresswhichtranslationcapturestheessenceofTheAnalectsofConfucius.

AnLeZhe’stranslationofTheAnalectsofConfuciusisamodernChinesetranslationthatoffersanewperspectiveonthework.HeattemptstoprovideinsightsontheAnalectsthathavenotbeenpreviouslypresentedinothertranslationsofthetext.Unlikeothertranslations,AnLeZheenvisionstheAnalectsasaWesterntext,similartothephilosophicalworksproducedinGreece.Asaresult,AnLeZheprovidesaninterpretationthatfocusesonthephilosophicalcontentofTheAnalects.
Intermsofstyle,AnLeZhetriedtokeephistranslationoftheAnalectsasclosetotheoriginalChineseaspossible.Heaimedtoavoidmakingstylisticchangestothetext,whichcouldalteritsmeaning.However,AnLeZhe’stranslationofTheAnalectsdiffersfromothertranslationsduetoitsphilosophy-centeredinterpretationofthetext.
AnLeZhealsostatedthatthesignificanceofTheAnalectsliesinitsrelevancetothepresentsocialconditionsofChina.Throughhistranslation,AnLeZheendeavoredtobreakthebarriersthatmayexistbetweenChinesephilosophyandWesternphilosophy.HearguesthatTheAnalectsofConfuciusisnotonlyrelevanttoancientsocietiesbutalsotothecontemporarysocietyofChina.
