Introduction:
Dibenzothiophene(DBT)anditshydrogenationderivativesplayasignificantroleintheproductionofcleanfuelsandchemicalsduetotheirpresenceinsulfur-containingcrudeoilfractions.ThedesulfurizationofDBTisoneofthemostcriticalstepsinthehydrodesulfurization(HDS)processfortheupgradingofpetroleum,assulfurcompoundsaremajorcontributorstoairpollutionandcatalystpoisoning.TheuseofmetalphosphidecatalystsinthehydrogenationanddesulfurizationofDBTanditsintermediateshasgainedattentionfortheirhighcatalyticactivityandselectivityinsulfurremoval.ThispaperaimstoreviewtherecentadvancementsandmechanismsofhydrogenationanddesulfurizationreactionsofDBTanditshydrogenationintermediatesonheterogeneousmetalphosphides.
Hydrogenationofdibenzothiophene:
ThehydrogenationofDBTinvolvestheadditionofhydrogenatomstoitsaromaticring,therebysaturatingthemolecule.Thereactioncanproceedviathehydrogenationofthearomaticdoublebondsorthecleavageofcarbon-sulfurbondsfollowedbyhydrogenation.Metalphosphides,suchasMoP,Ni2P,andCo2P,haveshownpromisingcatalyticactivityforthisreaction.Thesynergisticeffectbetweenmetalandphosphorusinthesecatalystsenhanceshydrogenactivation,improvingtheoverallhydrogenationefficiency.Severalstudieshaveinvestigatedtheeffectofdifferentparameters,suchastemperature,pressure,reactantconcentration,andcatalystmorphology,onthehydrogenationperformance.TheseinvestigationshaveprovidedinsightsintothereactionkineticsandoptimalreactionconditionsfortheselectivehydrogenationofDBT.
Desulfurizationofdibenzothiophene:
Desulfurizationisachallengingprocessduetothehighstabilityofthecarbon-sulfurbondinDBT.MetalphosphideshavebeenreportedtoeffectivelycatalyzethedesulfurizationofDBTtoproduceitscorrespondinghydrodesulfurizedproduct,biphenyl.ThedesulfurizationmechanisminvolvestheadsorptionofDBTonthecatalystsurface,followedbythecleavageofcarbon-sulfurbondsandsubsequent
