Introduction:
Thestudyofgalaxyclustersisanimportantareaofastrophysicsasitprovidesinsightintotheformationandevolutionoflarge-scalestructuresintheuniverse.Galaxyclusters,asthelargestknowngravitationallyboundstructuresintheuniverse,arealsoideallaboratoriesforstudyingdarkmatter,whichisadominantcomponentofthemasswithinclusters.TheWide-fieldInfraredSurveyExplorer(WISE)missionisapowerfultoolfordiscoveringnewgalaxyclusters.Inthispaper,wewillexplorethecapabilitiesofWISEdataindetectingandcharacterizinggalaxyclusters.
WISEMission:
TheWide-fieldInfraredSurveyExplorer(WISE)missionwaslaunchedin2009byNASAandwasdesignedtoconductanall-skysurveyatfourwavelengths(3.4,4.6,12,and22μm).WISEcollecteddataforabout10monthsandcoveredtheentireskyinthemid-infraredregime.Thesurveyresultedinthedetectionofover560millionobjects,includinghundredsofthousandsofgalaxies.
DetectingGalaxyClusterswithWISE:
OneofthemainadvantagesofWISEdataisitsdeepandwidecoverageoftheinfraredsky,whichmakesithighlyeffectiveindetectinggalaxyclusters.Clustersaretypicallyidentifiedthroughtheircharacteristicsignaturesintheinfrared,whichincludesthepresenceofhotintraclustergasandgalaxieswithhighinfraredluminosities.TheWISEsurveyissensitivetothethermalemissionfromtheintraclustergas,whichisdetectedinthe12and22μmbands.Inaddition,theWISEdatacanbeusedtoidentifygalaxieswithhighinfraredluminosities,whichareindicativeofgalaxiesundergoingintensestarformation,acommonfeatureinmerginggalaxyclusters.
CharacterizingGalaxyClusterswithWISE:
WISEdatacanalsobeusedtocharacterizethepropertiesofgalaxyclusters.Thesurfacebrightnessoftheintraclustergasemissioninthe12and22μmbandscanbeusedtoestimatethemassofthehotgaswithinacluster,whichisaproxyforthetotalmassofthecluster.TheWISEdatacanalsobeusedtostudythedistributionofthehotgasanditsrelationshiptothedistributionofgalaxieswithinthecluster.Thisisimportantforunderstandingtheprocessesthatgoverntheformationandevolutionofclusters.Inaddition,theWISEdatacanalsobeusedtostudythepropertiesofgalaxieswit
