IncollegeEnglishclassrooms,itisnotuncommontoseesomestudentsremainsilentorunresponsiveduringclassdiscussionsoractivities,whichisknownasthephenomenonofnegativesilence.Thisphenomenoncanbedetrimentaltoboththeindividualstudent'sacademicsuccessandtheoveralllearningeffectivenessoftheclass.Therefore,itisnecessarytoinvestigatethecausesofnegativesilenceincollegeEnglishclassroomsandproposeeffectivestrategiestoaddressthisissue.
CausesofNegativeSilence
1.FearofSpeakinginPublic
Oneofthemaincausesofnegativesilenceisthefearofspeakinginpublic.Somestudentsareafraidofmakingmistakes,beingjudgedbyothers,orembarrassingthemselvesinfrontoftheirpeers.ThisfearcanbeespeciallyprevalentincollegeEnglishclassrooms,wherestudentsarerequiredtospeakinaforeignlanguageandmaylackconfidenceintheirlanguageproficiency.
