Abstract:
ThispaperaimstoanalyzethelanguagefeaturesobservedinhighandlowscoringessaysofEnglishmajorstudents,utilizingacorpus-basedapproach.Thestudyexaminesvariouslinguisticparameterssuchasvocabularyrichness,grammaticalaccuracy,organization,andcohesioninordertoidentifythedistinguishingcharacteristicsthatcontributetothediscrepancyinessayscores.
Introduction:
Englishmajorstudentsareexpectedtopossessproficientlanguageskills,especiallyinwriting,asitisacrucialaspectoftheiracademicandprofessionaldevelopment.However,thereisoftenasignificantvariationinessayscoresamongthisgroup,indicatingdifferencesinlanguageproficiency.ThisstudyseekstouncoverthelinguisticfeaturesthatdifferentiatehighandlowscoringessaysamongEnglishmajorstudents,providinginsightstoimproveteachingandlearningeffectiveness.
Methodology:
AcorpusconsistingofhighandlowscoringessaysrandomlyselectedfromapoolofEnglishmajorstudents'submissionswascompiled.TheessayswerescoredbyexperiencedEnglishteachersusingastandardizedrubric.Thecorpuswasthensubjectedtoaseriesoflinguisticanalysestoidentifydistinctivecharacteristicsinlanguageusage.
ResultsandDiscussion:
1.VocabularyRichness:
Highscoringessaysexhibitedawiderrangeofvocabularycomparedtolowscoringessays.Theuseofadvancedvocabulary,precisewordchoices,andcontextualappropriatenesscontributedtoamoreexpressiveandsophisticatedwritingstyle.Conversely,lowscoringessaysoftendisplayedrepetitiveandlimitedvocabulary,leadingtodullandlessimpactfulwriting.
2.GrammaticalAccuracy:
Highscoringessaysdemonstratedastrongergraspofgrammaticalrules,includingcorrectverbtenseusage,subject-verbagreement,andsentencestructure.Conversely,lowscoringessaysoftencontainedgrammaticalerrorssuchasfaultyparallelism,subject-verbdisagreement,andinconsistentverbtenses,whichaffectedtheclarityandcoherenceofthewriting.
