Abstract:
Wavelength-divisionmultiplexing(WDM)isakeytechnologyinmodernopticalcommunicationsystems,providingthecapabilitytotransmitmultiplechannelsofinformationsimultaneouslyoverasingleopticalfiber.WDMfiltersplayacrucialroleinseparatingandcombiningthesedifferentwavelengthchannels.Inthispaper,weproposeanoveldesignofawavelength-interleavedfilterbasedonadualmicroring-enhancedMach-ZehnderInterferometer(MZI).
Introduction:
ThedemandforhigherdatatransmissionratesinopticalcommunicationsystemshasledtothedevelopmentofWDMtechnology.WDMallowsmultiplewavelengthstobetransmittedoverasinglefiber,significantlyincreasingtheoverallcapacity.VarioustypesofWDMfiltershavebeendevelopedtoseparateandcombinedifferentwavelengthchannels.Amongthem,theMach-ZehnderInterferometer(MZI)iswidelyusedduetoitssimplicityandversatility.
However,conventionalMZIssufferfromlimitedchannelspacingandhighinsertionloss.Toovercometheselimitations,weproposeanoveldesignthatincorporatesdualmicroringsintotheMZIstructure.Thedualmicroringsserveasresonators,enhancingthefilteringcapabilitiesofthedeviceandenablinglargerchannelspacing.
DesignandFabrication:
Theproposeddualmicroring-enhancedMZIconsistsofaMach-ZehnderInterferometerwithtwoadjacentmicroringsplacedatstrategicpositions.Theopticalsignalissplitintotwoarms,withonearmpassingthroughtheuppermicroringandtheotherthroughthelowermicroring.Themicroringsactasresonators,selectivelydroppingortransmittingspecificwavelengths.
Thedeviceisfabricatedusingstandardsilicon-on-insulator(SOI)technology.Thewaveguidesandringsaredefinedusingelectronbeamlithography,andthestructureisetchedintotheSOIsubstrateusingreactiveionetching.Finally,thedeviceispassivated,andtheinputandoutputfibersarealignedandbondedtothechip.
PerformanceAnalysis:
Theproposeddualmicroring-enhancedMZIoffersseveraladvantagesoverconventionalMZIs.Firstly,itenableslargerchannelspacing,reducingthecomplexityandcostofwavelengthdivisionmulti
