TheColdCoreCatalogueofPlanckObjectswaspresented
heretodayatthe217thmeetingoftheAmericanAstronomical
Societyaspartofthereleaseofthefirstscientificresultsfrom
thePlanckmission.OtherPlanckresultsreleasedtodayare
relatedtoremotegalaxyclusters,dustygalaxiesinwhichlarge
numbersofnewstarsareborn,andextremelyrapidlyspinning
dustparticlesinourownMilkyWay.
PlanckwaslaunchedinMay2009.Themission'sultimate
goalistolearnmoreabouttheevolutionoftheuniverseby
mappingthecosmicbackgroundradiation—thefaintafterglow
ofthebigbang.Thatcouldtakeanotheryearortwo,says
CharlesLawrenceofNASA'sJetPropulsionLaboratory,oneof
Planck'sprojectscientists.Meanwhile,Lawrencesays,thespace
observatoryisrevealingalotabout"everythingelseinthe
universe."
Thestellarwombsareacaseinpoint."Thesearethecoldest
objectsknownintheuniverse,"saysLawrence;somearejust7°
aboveabsolutezero.Suchcoldobjectsgiveofffaintradiationat
wavelengthsshorterthan1millimeter,andPlanck'ssensitive
detectorsaregreatatfindingthem,saysHelou.
