Introduction
FormulaSAEisanannualcompetitionwhereengineeringstudentsfromaroundtheworlddesign,build,andracesmallformula-styleracecars.Oneofthemostcriticalaspectsofbuildingasuccessfulracecaristhedesignoftheengineandexhaustsystem.Inthisarticle,wewilldiscusstheoptimizationdesignoftheFSAEracecar'sengineandexhaustsystem.
Background
FormulaSAEracecarsarepoweredbyfour-strokegasolineengineswithamaximumdisplacementof610cc.Therulesofthecompetitionlimitthenumberofcylinderstofour,andaturbochargerorsuperchargerisnotpermitted.Thegoaloftheenginedesignistoprovidemaximumpowerandtorqueoutputwhilestayingwithintheseconstraints.
DesignConsiderations
Theengineandexhaustsystemmustbedesignedtomeetthefollowingcriteria:
-Maximizehorsepowerandtorque
-MeetFSAEcompetitionrules
-Providereliableandconsistentperformance
-Optimizeweightandsize
-Minimizenoisepollution
OptimizationDesignApproach
Tooptimizetheengineandexhaustsystem,thefollowingapproachwillbetaken:
Step1:EngineDesign
Theengine'sdesignmusttakeintoaccounttheFSAEcompetitionrulesandtheoptimizationobjectives.Asingle-cylinder,four-strokeenginewillbedesigned,withanoverheadcamshaftconfiguration.Theenginewillfeatureavariable-valve-timingsystemtooptimizepowerandtorqueoutputacrosstheRPMrange.Theenginewillbedesignedwithanincreaseinthecompressionratiotoenhancepoweroutput,withmodificationstothecylinderhead.
Step2:ExhaustSystemDesign
Theexhaustsystemdesignwillconsidertheaforementionedoptimizationobjectives.Thedesignwillaimtomaximizeexhaustgasflowefficiencywhileminimizingbackpressureandnoisepollution.Theexhaustsystemwillconsistofaheader,pipes,andamuffler.Theheaderwillfeatureequal-lengthpipestomaximizepoweroutput.Themufflerwillbedesignedtominimizenoiseemissionswhilestillallowingforahigh-flowrateofexhaustgases.
Step3:SystemIntegrationandTuning
Thefinaldesignwillintegratetheengineandexhaustsystem,withconsiderationsgiventofine-tuningthesystemforpeakperformance.Theengine'sfuelinjectionsystemwillbetunedtoensureaconsistentair/fuelratioacros
