Ahugechallenge①facedtheCityofLondonCorporation—howtobuildabridgedownstreamfromLondonBridgewithoutdisrupting(扰乱)rivertrafficactivities.Togenerateideas,acommitteewasformedin1876,andapubliccompetitionwaslaunchedtofindadesignforthenewcrossing.
Over50designsweresubmitted②totheCommitteeforconsideration,someofwhichareondisplayatTowerBridge.Itwasn’tuntilOctober1884,however,thatSirHoraceJones,theCityArchitectofferedthechosendesignforTowerBridgeasasolution.BuildingtheBridge
IttookeightyearstobuildTowerBridgeunderthewatchfuleyeofSirJohnWolfeBarry.Twomassivepierswerebuiltonfoundations③sunkintotheriverbedtosupporttheconstruction,andover11,000tonsofsteelprovidedtheframeworkfortheTowersandWalkways.Howitworks
Whenitwasbuilt,TowerBridgewasthelargestandmostsophisticatedbasculebridge(复杂的开合桥)evercompleted.Thesebasculeswereoperatedbyhydraulics(液压系统),usingsteamtopowerthehugepumpingengines.Thebasculesonlytookaboutaminutetoraisetotheirmaximum④angleof86degrees.
